First, you really need to decide whether or not you want to be an entrepreneur. For some, the ability to go to work for themselves is a great reward but it also comes with a great many risks. Namely, the stability of a 9 – 5 job will be missing and entrepreneurs seldom have weeks where they do not work a lot of long hours. However, being an entrepreneur also brings with it the potential to create your own wealth in significant volumes. That alone can be a huge motivator for many.
Of course, you will also need to decide what type of entrepreneurial venture you wish to engage in. There are so many different forms of self-employment to seek you will really never run out of choices. Common entrepreneurial methods involve operating any type of brick and mortar small business, freelancing or working as an independent contractor, day trading, network marketing, or even venturing into the entertainment world. And there are many, many more strategies you can employ. So, which one do you choose?
Here is a secret: you can only succeed at those things you like and possess skills with. While this may seem like common sense, there are many that follow others’ advice or lead to explore opportunities in ventures they dislike and lack aptitude in. Does this sound like a path to success? Probably not! That is why you need to take the steps to truly realize what your skills are and then seek out those opportunities that play to your skills and likes.
It also certainly does not hurt to look into the lives and travels of those that have succeeded in their ventures as well. There are scores of books written about and by successful people. Investing a little time in such material is definitely recommended. Reading material on entrepreneurism is certainly advisable as well. In fact, there is an excellent magazine entitled – surprise – Entrepreneur and it is certainly a publication worth reading every month. Expand your education in the realm of entrepreneurism and you will reap its rewards. While we sometimes lose sight of this basic fact, it is often the most important one to pay attention to.
And, most of all, you will need a lot of get up and go, adaptability/flexibility, and commitment. This will open the door for you to succeed in your entrepreneurial ventures more than anything else. Remember, being an entrepreneur is about you and that means you are the driving force behind whether or not you succeed.
